Sliven is one of the most important Bulgarian industrial centers, with traditions in the production of textile, machine building, glass, electrical production, and food and wine industries.

The largest enterprises are: “Miroglio Lana” (woolen goods and after the privatization by an Italian company – silk textiles), “Decotex carpet” (different types of carpets), “Kvartz” (lead crystal, lighting fixtures and glass), “Svetlina” (the only Bulgarian manufacturer of all kinds of lamps), “ZMM-Sliven” (machine building manufacturer), “Dinamo” (electrical manufacturer), “Vini” (wine and liquor), “Domaine Boyar” (wine). There many other smaller companies for construction and transport, enterprises for textile, furniture, glass, meat and milk, bread production, tinned goods,  production and reproduction of agricultural products all which have obtained approval on the market.

Rural economy

The favorable climate and the established irrigation system are prerequisite for the recognition of the region of Sliven as a strategic supplier of agricultural products. The conditions are extremely suitable for the development of fruit culture (especially for growing peaches and cherries), growing of grapevines, vegetable growing, the growing of sunflower and corn, as well as the development of stock-breeding. The National Institute of Peaches and the Centre for the selection and reproduction of stock-breeding (where the stock-breeding gene bank of stock of Bulgaria is kept) are both located in Sliven.

The municipal market in Sliven is one of the most organized in Bulgaria. The modern market for fruit, vegetables and flowers, built according to the pilot Bulgarian-German project, offers new opportunities for producers and wholesale dealers.
