Established on crossroads

Our ancestors have established the town on a crossroads and this is one of the biggest advantages of Sliven, which has played a major role in the past and the present development of the town.

Situated on a crossroad, with convenient transport connections to Sofia and the cities on the Black Sea, next to the mountain passes, connecting North and South Bulgarian, Sliven shows hospitality to everyone, who is attracted by its picturesque nature and searches for historical and intellectual values, to those who want to feel the romantic side of the old streets and houses, or to explore the modern places for walking, resting and entertainment

Location and map

 Sliven is situated on the outskirts of the Southern slopes and hilly spurs of the Sliven Mountain (1181 m), from which the Eastern part of the Balkan range starts. On the South and the East the town is opened toward the Sliven plain. Sliven is situated 300 km east of Sofia, 110 km away from Bourgas – the biggest commercial port in Bulgaria, 130 km from the Greece border and 130 km from the Turkey border. Its altitude varies from 180 m up to 300 m. Sliven Municipality is situated on the sub-Balkan plain in the zone of transitional-continental climate. In the region of Sliven, winter is mild and summer is relatively warm. The local wind “Bora” is typical for the region.

Road newtwork

The town is situated on the railway line №3 and on the international route E-773 connecting Sofia and Bourgas.The road network in Sliven region is very well supported.

Sliven Airport:

Sliven flight strip is 2.5 kms long and 45 meters wide. The airport has a flight-managing centre and a passenger and a cargo centre. At present the airport is an air base of the Sliven air fleet and it is also used for air shows.

Contemporary Sliven combines both the functions of an economic and spiritual centre with these of a regional and municipal administrative centre. With its 107 000 residents Sliven is the 8th biggest town in the country.
