INTERESTNG INITIATIVES CELEBRATED THE 140th ANNIVERSARY OF THE AMERICAN WITER JACK LONDON IN "SAVA DOBROPLODNI" REGIONAL LIBRARY- SLIVEN
Jack London (1876-1916), (born John Griffith Chaney) is an American writer, who wrote over 50 novels and 200 short stories, which describe the fascinating power of nature and the struggle to survive in difficult conditions. Among his best-known novels are "The Sea Wolf", "White Fang", "The Call of the Wild", "Martin Eden", "The Valley of the Moon", "Smoke Bellew", etc. Jack London was born on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco. He spent his childhood in poverty. After completing primary education in 1889, he began working in a cannery. Later he became a shrimp hunter, and sailed to Japan on board of a schooner for seals hunting.
After a series of adventures, Jack London returned
to civilized life and completed his secondary education in 1896. He was
admitted to the University of California. The very next year, due to lack of
money, he dropped out. Jack London was educating himself throughout his
whole life. He was a man with many interests. His personal library numbered
15 000 books. During the "gold rush" in 1897 Jack London became a prospector in the Klondike, where he obtained material for his first successful stories. He began writing short stories and in 1898 he made serious attempts to be published - this memorable battle was described in his novel "Martin Eden" (1909).
In 1901 the Socialist Party nominated Jack London a mayor of Oakland, but
another candidate won the elections. Then London started a hard writing
career that brought him wide popularity. He wrote both literary and
journalistic works. His first novel, "The Son of the Wolf" was published in
1900. And "The Call of the Wild" (1903), "White Fang" (1906) and "Burning
Daylight" (1910) met the great interest by the general readership. Many researchers believe that Jack London is the best in short stories writing. Indeed, his stories are a model for short prose with its flawless construction, and his novels often resemble a series of related stories. A controversy that will probably never be settled concerns the cause of Jack London's death. According to rumors among his contemporaries, he committed a suicide. Jack London's ashes were buried in a simple grave in Glen Ellen, California, marked only by a large boulder, overgrown with moss.
The jubilee was celebrated by presenting movies, based on the book "The Call of the Wild" in English and exhibition of the books of the author. The lessons were held on schedule in the Foreign languages center of the library. |
