February |
In pursuance of a Decree of Council of ministers, dated October 1952, concerning establishment of state libraries in several fast developing towns, amongst which was Sliven, by Decision № 58/dated 11 February 1955 of the Executive committee of the Town national council of Sliven, the Committee placed at the Town State Library’s disposal the building on 12 “Georgi Kirkov” Street /a former building of the police administration /. |

August 1 |
The “house of the goblins” - a former building of the police administration in Sliven-was reconstructed to suit the needs of a library. Kalina Koseva, Jordanka Chaparova, Vala Zhecheva and Ginka Toneva start the books processing of library’s funds and the establishment of the Town State Library. Repair and equipment of the building go parallel with these processes. |

Making of a catalogue of the whole library’s book fund in alphabetical order and a classified catalogue of the books of the reading-room started. |

“Periodicals” fund and an alphabetical catalogue “Periodicals” were differentiated. |

March |
Veselina Pantofchieva was appointed to the post of a librarian in the library. |

June 23 |
The Town State Library was opened for readers by the chairman of the Town National Council – Sliven – Petar Kanev. Georgi Kirkov was chosen for a patron of the library. The library started working placing at readers’ disposal 8880 books and 20 periodicals. There operated a department for taking out books for adults, a general reading-room, a reference-informational department, a children’s department and a reading-room. There also was a methodical department at the library. |

July 4 – 5 |
Kalina Koseva-a directress of the library took part in a National meeting of the directors of the 20 State libraries in the country in Varna, organized by the Ministry of culture. |

August 3 |
“Slivensko delo” newspaper started publishing a column “New books in the State library”. |

Library’s staff increased. Yanka Gospodinova was appointed to the post of a librarian. |

November 1
|
A meeting with the writer Kamen Kalchev was organized. It was the first meeting in the library. |

June |
Recommendatory lists of books on certain topic were made up. |

July 17 |
By government decree № 167 “About the library work in Bulgaria” the methodical functions of the Regional libraries were defined. A program of the methodical activity of the library was worked up. |

Kalina Koseva-a directress of the library took part in a National conference of book processing in state libraries. |

Book processing of books in foreign languages started. |
|
November 18 – 19 |
The directress of the library took part in a National conference on the problems of the methodical work of the libraries in Yambol. |

A Week of children’s books took place in the library for the first time. |

A summer reading-room was opened in the town’s garden. |

The library, as a regional methodical centre, organized a training course for librarians of community centers and professional library networks from Sliven, Stara Zagora and Bourgas regions. |

Reconstruction of the library’s roof was made. |

“Books processing” department, “Inter-library services” department and a “Methodical” department were established, with reference to the carrying out library’s functions as a regional library. |

A meeting with the writer Dimitar Talev was held in the library. |

August 27 |
Discussion of the Y.D.Mihailik’s book “Soldier was a soldier even alone” is organized in the library in cooperation with the Club of the army officers. |

October 1-10 |
An Exhibition of Soviet books was organized by the library’s direction in cooperation with the Committee for Bulgarian-Soviet friendship and the “Printed editions” Publishing house. |

March- November |
First recommendatory bibliographical reference lists: “Fridrih Shiller”,”Pjotr Ilich Chaikovski”, “In front of the new map of the world”, „What to read during the days of the Week of children’s books”, „For high yields of peaches” etc. were published in the library. |

January |
Results of library’s activities in 1959 were reported - 6500 new books were bought, 4446 readers were registered, 108 146 books were taken out. |

February |
First inquiry of readers’ opinion was carried out, concerning the directions of book processing in the library. |

September 30 |
A feast of poetry and reading of works of Veselin Andreev, Nevena Stefanova, Veselin Hanchev and Bancho Banov was organized in the library. |

|
An Exhibition of Soviet books was organized by the library’s direction in cooperation with the Committee for Bulgarian-Soviet friendship and the “Printed editions” Publishing house. |

January 20 |
A program of activities for regional libraries on occasion of the 200 years anniversary of the writing of Paisii Hilendarski’s “History Slavic-Bulgarian” was worked up for the period January 1, 1961 - May 4, 1962. A table of library’s activities is approved. |

“Reference-bibliographical” department was established. |

April 16-23 |
A Week of children’s book was organized in the library. |
|
May 17-24 |
A Week of Bulgarian book was organized by the library in the eve of the Day of Slavic literature and culture. An exhibition was arranged, a night, dedicated to national education was carried out and a recommendatory list of fiction was made up during the days of that week. |

May 29 |
A regional conference of librarians from community centers, concerning their Summer activities was organized. |

June 23
|
Fifth anniversary of the establishment of “Georgi Kirkov” Regional Library were celebrated. For those 5 years 23 000 readers and 237 000 visitations were registered, 530 000 books were taken out, the book fund numbered 44 000 books. |

August |
A readers’ conference “The youth of our ancestors” and a meeting with the writers Dimitar Mantov and Anton Donchev were organized in cooperation with the Club of the National Army. |

The general official book catalogue was completed. A system of catalogues reveals library’s book funds. |

Kalina Koseva – a directress of the library took part in a methodical meeting of the directors and methodologists of regional libraries for popularizing public-political literature in Yambol. |

A meeting with the writer Tsvetan Angelov and the editorial staff of “Septemvriiche” magazine was organized during the days of the Week of children’s books. |

May |
Library’s staff was awarded for its participation in the National libraries’ activities program, dedicated to the 200 anniversary of the writing of Paisii Hilendarski’s “History Slavic-Bulgarian”. |

A union catalogue of periodicals in Sliven and Sliven region was published. |

Kalina Koseva – the directress of the library took part in a conference of library work and bibliography in Plovdiv, concerning the matters of free accessing the library funds by readers. |

Bibliographies of Elisaveta Bagriana, Konstantin Konstantinov, Nikola Furnadjiev and Jordan Jovkov were published. |

First regional seminar of librarians of all types of libraries on topic “Problems in books acquisition” was held. |

Kalina Koseva took part in a National meeting in Varna, on which methodical activity of regional libraries was discussed. |
